Trauma therapy in Footscray | Calm Centre Therapy

About Trauma

Trauma can come through overwhelming or distressing single events, but also through ongoing patterns of disconnection, abuse, unmet childhood needs, instability, cultural displacement, bullying, family legacies, discrimination, or growing up feeling emotionally unsafe.

In general, trauma can be understood in two ways:

Acute Trauma:
Acute trauma might come from experiences where your safety or sense of control were threatened, and where this overwhelmed your capacity to cope.

Chronic Trauma:
Chronic trauma can come from repeated experiences of not feeling safe, seen, protected, or fully accepted and which overwhelm your capacity to cope over time.

Both types of trauma impact the way we relate to ourselves, to the world and to others.

The effects of trauma can show up in subtle ways across different areas of life and may look like anxiety, burnout, intrusive memories or images, emotional flooding, or a persistent sense of hypervigilence.

Accessing therapy for trauma might be particularly helpful if you notice patterns such as shutting down, people-pleasing, feeling constantly on alert, experiencing flashbacks or painful memories, feeling disconnected from yourself or finding relationships overwhelming and unsettling.

About Trauma therapy

Trauma Therapy is not about rushing into painful memories or asking you to tell your story before you feel ready.

At Calm Centre Therapy, being trauma-informed means moving at a pace that feels safe and collaborative. Together, we'll pay attention to how past experiences may still be shaping your relationship with yourself, others and the world around you. Trauma focused therapy can support you to move forward with more self-compassion, understanding and practical new tools or strategies to support your nervous system.

In sessions, we might explore:

  • how your nervous system responds to stress and overwhelm

  • the ways you learned to cope, adapt, or protect yourself

  • what helps you feel like you have more choice, steadiness, self-understanding and support in the present

You don’t need to have the “perfect words" to start therapy. We can start with what you’re noticing in the present and making room for all parts of you.

Calm Centre Therapy offers trauma-informed therapy in Footscray, Melbourne, and via telehealth across Australia.
